I'm Sick of Generalization.
I’ve posted a couple entries about gay marriage and I know how heated this debate can get. Its been how long since the vote (and I didn’t vote)? And we’re still debating over this..
A friend of mine posted a blog about NoH8 and RescueMarriage.Org and she said:
…anyone against gay marriage is a close minded, hypocrite that needs to step off their holier than thou pedestal and get a reality check. what others do is none of your business unless it impedes on your personal rights. i’m sorry, you disagreeing is not enough to rob others of a right you think you’re solely entitled to….
I am SOOO sick of this one perception of people who do not support gay marriage! My response to her:
I do not appreciate the generalization that all who oppose gay marriage are close minded hypocrites with a “holier than thou” attitude. That is SOOOO wrong. We’re not monsters. I mean, yeah, there are people like that, but why do those people get to speak for the rest of us? I mean, I wouldn’t call myself or some of my people close-minded or a hypocrite. I know I’m a sinner. I know I will slip up. I’m not perfect and you can’t expect me to be.
I love every person (until they f**k w/ me or my people) and just because they are gay or lesbian doesn’t make them any less human. And this is where I disagree with people who excommunicate people. I believe that everyone DOES have the right to be happy. And I think that just because they prefer the same sex, they shouldn’t be shunned. That’s like if you lied to me and I decided you can’t go to my school anymore. So I agree that some people do take it too seriously.BUT… marriage IS a religious institution. It is not meant to be run by the government. And if same sex marriages are allowed, that’s like calling God a hypocrite, in my opinion.
Maybe a better alternative would be for EVERYONE whether male/female, male/male, female/female have civil unions in the eyes of the government… and if they choose to, marry under the eyes of God.
This issue is just hard to draw the line because of the separation of the whole church and state.
I know I can’t change your mind about this. Frankly, I don’t really care if you do or not… but, I hope this gives you a different perspective of the other side. And I hope that you don’t think of me as a bad/different person now. I’m still that same person.
Not all of us are haters.

But I guess our side will never win this one. There will always be a “But what about…” =/
I just thought I’d write a post about it because maybe there is a chance that people might actually see this… and actually take the time to read it… and not just automatically assume that I’m a hater just because I support the ban. We’re not all haters.
Also, I know that during the voting time that many people where saying that supporters were trampling on people’s beliefs. That they needed to be more tolerant of other people and their beliefs. But, what I think was a fail is that the non-supporters failed to be tolerant of prop 8 supporters’ beliefs.
Its hard to be tolerant when the views are pretty much polar opposites. There can’t really be much compromise.
